Example Artist's Statment- SHORTExample #1 If these photos have a mission, it is this: capture rarely viewed scenes and environments and present them in an interesting way. It may be a lonesome tree on an isolated hill or the dark interior of an abandoned building. Whatever the locale, on the best of days these images will stir up unexpected feelings and thoughts in the viewer. Studio Tempura is based out of Baltimore, MD and has been creating photographs for over a decade. http://www.digital-photography-school.com/6-tips-for-writing-an-artist%e2%80%99s-statement#ixzz1NJobnuIr Example #2 The less obvious lessons of nature interest me the most. My photographs are most successful I believe, when they not only show beauty, but evoke a sense of wonder and mystery. I like my photographs to give a feeling of looking at a hidden world we don't normally see. Nature offers an infinity of views and changing light. There are great photographs waiting to be found everywhere, everyday. But they are almost never to be found easily. It takes the vision of an artist, along with the tenacity of a hunter, to find a great photograph in nature.http://willconnor.com/statement.html Ansel Adams : My approach to photography is based on my belief in the vigor and values of the world in nature—in the aspects of grandeur and of the minutiae all about us. I believe in growing things, and in things which have grown and died magnificently. I believe in people and in the simple aspects of human life, and in the relation of man to nature. I believe that man must be free, both in spirit and society, that he must build strength into himself, affirming the "enormous beauty of the world" and acquiring the confidence to see and to express his vision. And I believe in photography as one means of expressing this affirmation, and of achieving an ultimate happiness and faith. http://www.photokaboom.com/photography/learn/ebooks/PATH/39_back_to_you_artist_statement.htm http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/Pam-Artist.htm |
Longer Artist's StatementsMirror, Mirror - by Lauren Greenfield (excerpt)
From Girl Culture (Chronicle Books, 2002) Girl Culture has been my journey as a photographer, as an observer of culture, as part of the media, as a media critic, as a woman, as a girl. The photographs in this book and exhibition are both very personal and very public. They are about what is private and what is public and where the line that divides the two lies, when that line exists at all anymore. They are about the popular culture that we share and the way the culture leaves its imprint on individuals in their most public and private moments. They are about the girls I photographed. They are also about me. I cannot say exactly when I began this project. I was enmeshed in girl culture before I was a photographer, and I was photographing girl culture before I realized I was working on Girl Culture. The first part of this process was making sense of what I had been drawn to for years in my photography, the themes and subject matter I visited again and again. Unlike other projects I’ve worked on, this one was less like building with blocks and more like deciphering code. The elements were all there, almost from the beginning. I simply needed to identify them, understand their importance, find the connections, and look for the big picture. http://www.laurengreenfield.com/index.php?p=4B32KF87 Artist Statement - Faces and Places I use photography as a means of self-expression – I make pictures for myself, to identify with hidden qualities of my character, to better understand my reality, and to express my interpretation of the world around me. A clearer understanding of myself and of my world allow me to explore fragments of life as an abstract form, and also to interact with people I would otherwise not be able to engage with. My goal is to use my camera like Alice’s rabbit hole, to open an unexplored world, a place of curious self-expression, but also a world of new relationships, new chances new beginnings and most importantly new stories. My choice of subject comes from a place of intuition and is fuelled by an impetuous desire to partake in the stories that unfold around me. I seek the unknown and I look for the light within the shadows, the stories that are not at first obvious and the uncommon in the common. I photograph people in their environments because I am curious of what lays behind their eyes, where they have been and where they hope to go......Elisa Paloschi http://www.eyesfull.com/facesandplaces/artist_statement.html LINKS TO MORE EXAMPLES http://www.artstudy.org/art-and-design-careers/sample-artist-statement.php http://www.trinity.edu/media/13/html/sara/statement.html http://www.artstudy.org/art-and-design-careers/sample-artist-statement.php |
